Dressing the Part

Costume Design at the Old Globe

October 15, 2010 – April 15, 2011

San Diego History Center presents a new, collaborative exhibition with The Old Globe Theatre! The exhibition celebrates one of the great costume collections in San Diego, the Old Globe’s 75th anniversary, and the San Diego History Center’s new emphasis on interactive exhibitions.  This multi-media experience gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the Old Globe’s Costume Shop and the team of professionals that create and care for the fascinating costumes and props used on stage.  Visitors experience the transformative power of the theatre from the perspectives of audience members, costume designers and actors as they travel through this exciting, interactive exhibition.  Through video interviews of Old Globe costume designers, they witness all the stages involved in costume and prop making; from sketch to fabrication, fitting to final product.

Visitors also have the opportunity to try on authentic costumes and to experience what it feels like to be ‘in character’ when they step onto a specially designed stage, theatrically lit by the Old Globe team.
