History for Half Pints

Now Offered Twice Each Month: 1st Fridays & 3rd Mondays

Make your next play date go down in history! Get to know other families while the kids enjoy crafts, entertaining activities and a special story time. All programs engage children in the history of the San Diego region. History for Half Pints is for children ages 3 -5 years and a favorite adult. History for Half Pints is generously sponsored by Target.

We're hugging trees as we mark Arbor Day! Read the Are Trees Alive? storybook, take a walk through Balboa Park; learn about the "Mother of Balboa Park", and make a tree craft to take home.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

How did you get to Balboa Park today? Did you walk, ride in a car, or fly in an airplane overhead? Explore the museum for different ways people traveled in the past. Learn what it's like to be a pilot, by reading the Pilot storybook, and make a moving craft to take home.

Stars & Stripes Patriotic Party!

The American flag proudly flies everywhere in San Diego. See how and why it was displayed in the past, as well as today. Learn about other nation's flags that once flew over San Diego when it was a young city. Read the F is for Flag storybook, help raise a flag in our museum, and make a red, white and blue craft to take home.

Happy Birthday BuM!

Dogs have been in San Diego since the time of the first settlers, but none are as well known as San Diego's town mascot, Bum!  Cupcakes await at our celebration of Bum's birthday, discover the adventurous life he led, read the Mutt Dog storybook, play some dog games, and make a fuzzy craft to take home.
