The Story of New San Diego and of
The story of the founding of New San Diego, now the main downtown area of the city of San Diego. Laid out in 1867 under the aegis of Alonzo Horton, New San Diego succeeded where two previous efforts to establish a city had failed. Old Town, as pre-1867 San Diego is now known, was deterioratiing when Horton arrived. He recognized that the existing city was too far inland, and immediately set out to build a new city centered on the point of entry, San Diego Bay. Old Town was further destroyed by fire in 1872 while Horton's New San Diego prospered and "New" was dropped from the name. Well written, with many pictures, this book is historically accurate and interesting.
