Creating an Artistic Basis: Local Artists Groups from the Early 20th Century features 40 works from San Diego History Center's collection. The exhibition includes oil works from San Diego's most celebrated artists - Charles Fries, Maurice Braun, Charles Reiffel, Belle Baranceanu, Edith White and more.

Faces of the Frontier
March 12, 2010 - June 6, 2010

This special exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and will feature over 100 portraits representing men and women who explored, fought over, and developed the American West. San Diego Historical Society is one of only two venues outside of Washington, D.C. hosting this exhibition.

San Diego Style
October 2, 2009 - June 27, 2010

In honor of the 20th anniversary of its Costume Council, San Diego History Center presents San Diego Style. This dramatic exhibition showcases dozens of high fashion ensembles worn in San Diego from the late 19th century to the present. Timothy Long, Curator of Costumes at the Chicago History Museum, organized the exhibition. Due to popular demand, this special exhibition has been extended to Sunday, June 27th!

Taking Flight

Featuring rare wartime aviation posters from the early 20th century, Taking Flight boasted a stunning collection from Bill and Claudia Allen and the Allen Airways Flying Museum.

A Different Life

Belle Baranceanu

“The Artist at Work” highlighted the career of acclaimed artist Belle Baranceanu. She is particularly noted for a series of WPA murals, several of which continue to grace public spaces around San Diego, as well as bold oil paintings of landscapes and portraits.
