The San Diego Historical Society hosts dozens of public programs and special events at its four historic sites, and throughout the community each year.  Programs range from walking tours, historic homes tours, lectures, workshops, exhibition openings and receptions. With numerous activities to choose from, there's something for everyone! Please see the calendar below for upcoming events.

Elegant and Splendid:
An Historic Garden and Landscape Tour

Spend an invigorating morning in the shade of towering pine, eucalyptus and oak trees as you explore the Marston House formal gardens and woodland pathways. Afterwards, enjoy a cup of seasonal tea and a scone on the terrace overlooking the rolling south lawn.

Ghastly and Ghoulish:
Unlocking Our Archival Vaults

You will never look at our Research Library and Archives quite the same way! Descend into the depths of the Casa de Balboa to view menacing objects, daunting documents, and chilling photographs held by the San Diego Historical Society, that showcase the darker side of San Diego's past. Join Victoria Cranner, Director of Collections, Jane Kenealy, Archivist, and Chris Travers, Director of the Booth Historical Photograph Archives for a chilling trip through some of San Diego's more macabre memories.

Elderhostel, Inc. Day of Discovery:
Marston House: An Arts & Crafts Icon





Take an adventure in lifelong learning by attending Elderhostel, Inc.’s Day of Discovery program: Marston House: An Arts & Crafts Icon. Led by San Diego Historical Society’s specially trained docents, Collections Curators and architectural preservationist, Paul Johnson of Johnson & Johnson Architects, your exploration of the Arts & Crafts era in San Diego will not only focus on architectural details, but the decorative arts, furniture, preservation and restoration of this historic home.  Deemed in 2007 as one of the top 25 must see Arts & Crafts Homes in America by Style 1900 magazine, the Marston House is truly one of San Diego’s grand architectural gems.

Grave Matters:
The Symbolism of Gravestone Art, Lecture & Cemetery Stroll

Ever wander through an historic cemetery and wonder why certain images and decoration appear on various gravestones. Angels, flowers, columns, willows & urns, what do they mean? Dr. Seth Mallios, Professor and Chair of Anthropology at San Diego State University discusses these images and the beliefs held by the people who chose them to be carved in stone as a permanent remembrance of loved ones lost. After his lecture at the Museum of San Diego History, meet at Mount Hope Cemetery for an in situ look at gravestone imagery.

Dias de las Muertas Celebration




SDHS partners with the Sherman Heights Cultural Council and the Friends of the Villa Montezuma, Inc. for this unique community celebration honoring the life of the deceased. Join docents from the Friends of the Villa Montezuma, Inc. on walking tours of the Sherman Heights Historic District as you view creatively designed Day of the Dead Altars. A special altar will be set up at the Villa Montezuma in honor of Jesse Shepard, musician & spiritualist who owned the home from 1887 - 1889. Chalk art drawing and family activities.

8th Annual Fallback Festival





Discover child life in the early 1800s as SDHS' Education Department hosts a booth at this annual children's event, sponsored by the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation. Touch objects from the past and participate in children's craft activities.

Lecture and Booksigning:
Japanese Americans in San Diego by Susan Hasegawa





Author Susan Hasegawa discusses her latest work on the Japanese American experience in San Diego. A Professor of History at San Diego Community College and the chair of the History and Political Science Department at City College, Ms. Hasegawa has spent over a decade researching and writing on the San Diego Japanese American experience as well as co-curating the exhibition Nikkei Youth Culture: Past, Present, Future on view at the San Diego Historical Society's Museum of San Diego History in 2007.

Holiday House Tours

Seeing Marston's Department Store decorated for the holidays had been a San Diego tradition from the early 1900s through 1963 when it closed its doors. Recapture or make new Marston memories by visiting their home this holiday season. Share in the sights, sounds and smells of holidays past as you tour the 1905 Marston House decorated for the holiday season with our specially trained docents.
