Looking south down 5th Street from "E", circa 1890. Although San Diego's population changed little during the 1890s, city improvements continued to occur throughout the decade. Electric streetcars replaced the horse-drawn cars, taller, more permanent buildings replaced the false-fronts of an earlier generation, and paved sidewalks and telephone lines linked downtown city streets.
