The Dawn of the World: Myths and Tales of the Miwok Indians of California.

C. Hart Merriam, ed. Lincoln and London: University of Nebraska Press, 1993. reprint 1910. $9.95

This reprint of one of the classics in American Indian oral history and literature reveals the religion and culture of a tribe of natives who lived in Central California. The original collection was made by the naturalist C. Hart Merriam, one of a handful of California scientists who sought to preserve the traditions of the fast disappearing natives. Today visitors can see the relatives of the Miwok peoples in the Yosemite valley reenact their sacred traditions. This books will help them understand the richness of world view they have brought into the 20th century.
