Book Notes
Richard Griswold del Castillo, Book Review Editor

Prominent Visitors to the California Missions 1786-1842.

Compiled by Msgr. Francis J. Weber. Los Angeles: Dawson's Book Shop, 1991. 220 pages.

Msgr. Weber has brought together the published commentaries of twenty-four foreign observers who visited the California missions during the period. His aim was to compile evidence that could give a more balanced picture of the lives and labors of the missionaries. Each observation is preceded by a brief discussion of the text setting it in a larger context. Both the discussion and the translated account are well documented with references. The lack of an index makes this book less useful as a reference than it might have been.
