Of all of California's Spanish missions, only the remains of La Purisima near Lompoc really give the modern visitor a good picture of what a mission was like during its operations in the era before secularization. Administered by the State of California as an historic park, the Lompoc mission shows the water supply, fields arid pastures, gardens and animals, processing areas, shops, storerooms, housing arrangements and religious activities which characterized the life of these large communities. An eclectic collection of documents, sources and other items pertaining to that mission have been brought together in Our Lady's Mission, a volume in the documentary history series done by Francis J. Weber for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The final volume in the series (except for forthcoming volumes on bibliography and a joint index for the series) is The Patriarchal Mission, a similar collection of readings on the Mission San Jose.
