Raymond Starr, Book Review Editor

Emil W. Haury's Prehistory of the American Southwest.

Edited by J. Jefferson Reid and David E. Doyel. Tucson: University of Arizona Press, 1986. Maps. Illustrations. Bibliographies. Index. 506 Pages. $45.00.

Emil W. Haury, professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Arizona, has been a major force in Southwestern prehistory for over half a century. Two of his students, J. Jefferson Reid and David E. Doyel, have prepared a massive volume which serves as a large reminder of the man and his career. The book begins with a biographical sketch of Haury and several general pieces by Haury, Much of the rest of the volume is devoted to materials on the paleoindian, Hohokam, Mogollon, and Anasazi peoples. Each of those sections begins with an essay on the topic, followed by selections from Haury's writings. The book is well illustrated by photographs and drawings and contains a wealth of bibliographic material, including a bibliography of Haury's writings. This is a major reference volume for the library of any scholar specializing in the prehistory of the American Southwest.
