Hazel Brayton Shoven (Mrs. Arthur M. Shoven)*

Hazel began her art studies under Anita W. Burnham and John Johanson at the Art Institute of Chicago, with additional study at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Arriving in San Diego in 1923 with her husband, she soon became an active member of the local art community. She had memberships in the San Diego Art Guild where she served as Social Chairman, La Jolla Art Association, Los Surenos Art Center and the Laguna Beach Art Association. One of the founders of the Spanish Village, she served on its board of directors. Exhibiting often in Southern California, she won several awards in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas. Although she did paint landscapes, still-life paintings predominate in her work. One of these was exhibited at the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935.
