Book Notes

On the Border: Portraits of America's Southwestern Frontier.
By Tom Miller. Tucson: University of Arizona Press. Reprint Edition, 1985. Maps. Bibliography. Index. 226 Pages. $7.95 Paperback.

This is the paperback reprint of a book first published by Harper and Row in 1981. On the Border is an account of life along the nearly 2000 mile border between the United States and Mexico. It resulted from the author's four months of travel in the region. In a journalistic account, Miller built his story around the lives of many people he met on that trip. It is highly readable and gives good insights into the borderlands as of about 1890. Although there is not very much on the San Diego-Tijuana end of the border, the book does create a broader context into which the histories of the two cities can be placed.
