Rock Art Papers, Volume I.

Edited by Ken Hedges. San Diego Museum Papers No. 16. San Diego: Museum of Man. 1983. Illustrations. 98 Pages. $10.95 Paper.

Under the leadership of Ken Hedges, the San Diego Museum of Man has become a focal point for the study of American rock art. The Museum's annual symposium now ranks second only to the annual meeting of the American Rock Art Research Association as an outlet for research on the subject. The current volume presents fourteen of the papers from the 1982 conference. Most of the papers do not relate to the San Diego area; four, however, do deal with rock art in Baja California. The work of James Workman, Eve Ewing, Christoper Lafferty and Ron Smith would be useful to historians dealing with the native American cultures of the area. In most cases the papers are brief, quite technical, and effectively supported by photographs or drawings. While clearly not for the general reader, Rock Art Papers, Volume I makes significant contributions to our knowledge of sites and the interpretations of rock art.
