Dude Ranching: A Complete History.

By Lawrence. R. Borne. Albuquerque: The University of New Mexico Press. 1983. Appendix. Bibliography. Illustrations. Index. 322 Pages. $24.95.

Lawrence Borne's book on dude ranching is a fascinating look at a significant topic which has not yet been fully explored by western historians. The book covers the origins of dude ranching in the nineteenth century, through the industry's peak in the early twentieth century, on to the present. Borne focuses mostly on the Rocky Mountain area, with minimal mention of other areas. Since he did not choose to deal with dude ranches in Southern California, Dude Ranching: A Complete History is a little less complete than some of us might desire.
