Book Notes

Selected Letters of Raymond Chandler. Edited by Frank MacShane. New York: Columbia University Press, 1981. Index. 501 pages.

Researchers on La Jolla in 1940s and 1950s may be interested in this volume. Raymond Chandler, mystery novelist and screenwriter, lived in La Jolla from 1946 until his death in 1959. The majority of the letters in this selection were written from his La Jolla address. The bulk of the letters do not pertain to the area, but there are a few references—not always flattering—to the "Village" and to San Diego, and there are also a few letters to San Diegans.
