Book Review
Raymond Starr, Book Review Editor

Starting with Defiance: Nineteenth Century Arizona Military Posts. By Constance Wynn Altshuler. Tucson: The Arizona Historical Society, 1983. IIlustrations. Maps. Bibliography. Index. 80 Pages. $16.00 Hardcover. $8.00 Paper.

The seventh volume in the Arizona Historical Society's Historical Monograph Series, Starting With Defiance is an account of Arizona military posts, camps and forts, 1849-1900. Based primarily upon official government records the book falls into two sections. There is an introductory general chapter on the military system, life in the posts, and some description of physical facilities. The rest of the book is devoted to an alphabetically arranged section on each individual military site. The entries range from a few lines to a few pages, and include dates, locations, physical description, who the post was named for, and related information. Although well done, the brevity of the book prevents it from being used for much more than quick reference.
