Serra's San Diego: Father Junípero Serra and California's Beginnings. By
Iris H. W. Engstrand. San Diego: San Diego Historical Society, 1982. Maps.
Illustrations. Bibliography. 17 Pages. $2.95 Paper.
Professor Engstrand, who has published frequently on San Diego and Spanish
colonial history, has prepard a brief account of Junípero Serra in San Diego.
She begins with Serra's background and early career, his arrival in San Diego,
and continues with the establishment of the original mission. Professor
Engstrand also traces the early experiences of the mission, its removal to
Mission Valley, and its relationship to the bigger picture of Spanish colonial
enterprise in Alta California. The author brings the story up to date by
explaining the origin of the Serra Museum and Presidio Park and describing
recent archaeological excavations on the site. All this makes Serra's San
Diego an excellent guide to present day Presidio Park and Serra Museum.
