Book Notes

David J. Weber, Book Review Editor

Da Capo Press has also reissued the 1932 edition of The Emigrants' Guide to California, by Joseph E. Ware, with notes and introduction by historian John Caughey (1972; $7.95). First published in early 1849, Ware’s work was assessed by Caughey as “the first adequate guide-book” to California. Among the forty-niners who used the book was Ware himself who had never been to California. He had relied on the experiences and published work of others to prepare his guide, Ware died of illness and exposure along the trail in 1849. DJW
