The Red House on the Hill. By Louise Fulton Hard. Escondido: Omni Publishers, 1982. Illustrations. 120 pages. $4.95 Paper.

Triggered by a 1976 Bicentennial program at Palomar College which taped reminiscences of longtime residents of the area, Louise Fulton Hard proceeded to write a book about growing up in the San Marcos area, 1910-1928. Her book deals primarily with home and school, with a very personal focus; it contains little about public affairs or the world beyond San Marcos. The experiences of a small girl growing up in a rural/small town setting will bring back familiar memories to many older readers, and will evoke a past now gone from Southern California for younger readers.
