STORIES OF SAN DIEGO

This docent-guided tour offers a comprehensive exploration of San Diego’s history from the time of early Kumeyaay settlements until today. Through the examination of artifacts, documents, art, historic photographs, and through tour-related activities, the past comes alive and students discover how the history of San Diego is reflected in our culture today. Student investigations focus on the role that the natural landscape played in San Diego’s development, on contributions of the diverse peoples that settled here, and on the main events and personalities that have shaped San Diego. Students also get to “meet” some of these personalities when they dress up as George Marston, Mary Chase Walker, Kate Sessions and Ah Quinn.

Tour levels: Elementary; Middle

Cost: $5 per student; free for teachers and chaperones; $10 reservation fee  (free museum admission to students in Title 1 schools within San Diego County )

Dates Offered: Tuesdays; Wednesdays; Thursdays; Fridays, September – July

Time: 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM

Maximum Number of Students: 60

Gallery Highlights

A combination of all the gallery tours, students experience an overview of highlights from the permanent and temporary exhibitions on view at San Diego History Center. Docents facilitate the exploration of a wide variety of exhibitions through the examination of selected objects, including historic artifacts, art, costumes, documents and photographs. Students gain an appreciation of the diversity and scope of the collections and exhibitions of San Diego History Center while discovering the rich history of the city and the region.
