Balboa Park | Coronado | Waterfront | Downtown | The County

In the 1960s a newspaper article noted that San Diego was utilized but never represented in the movies. In essence, San Diego was a “stepsister” of the movies, disguised as another city. Many times between 1916 and 1939, Balboa Park took on the role of a South American republic, ripe for revolution. The Hotel del Coronado often appeared as Florida. Fallbrook bore a close resemblance to the French Countryside for D.W. Griffith to film there. Julian played the part of Texas. The East County desert has masqueraded as battlefields, for both modern-day and ancient wars. An abandoned hospital and a bankrupt resort have recently been the most popular filming locations.
