In February 2018, the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art (SDAAMFA) hosted at the San Diego History Center its first annual recognition of individual’s whose contributions have resulted in retaining and expanding the cultural expressions that are uniquely African American. This recognition has become exceedingly important during this time when we see the rich, and diverse array of aesthetics, expressions and styles inherent in African American culture continue to be limited or all together omitted by major institutions.

Our 2019 Honorees

Dajahn Blevins

Founder/Director of KuumbaFest

In recognition of his extraordinary commitment to the Legacy African Americans through the creation of KuumbaFest in 1993. His multi-generational productions utilize the arts to educate people from all walks of life about the brilliance of African and African American culture and history.

Ms. Manuelita Brown

Sculptor

in recognition of her extraordinary talent as a sculptor and activist through her art. She has have paved the way for future sculptors with her vast installations nationwide and willingness to pass on her knowledge to any and all who are interested.

Ms. Makeda ‘Dread’ Cheatom

Founder/Director The World Beat Center in Balboa Park

In recognition of her vision for cultural awareness that resulted in major gift to the City of San Diego, the development of the World Beat Center in Balboa Park. She has brought international recognition to the beauty found in the art and culture of the Africa Diaspora.

The guest honorees will be on a panel where they will discuss the importance of preserving one’s culture. The panel will be hosted by Ms. Dyana Williams, radio royalty and founder of Influence Entertainment, who has hosted radio and TV programs for 40 years. Ms. Williams’ impressive catalog of work as on-air radio and TV talent includes WHUR-FM (Washington, DC) and WBLS-FM (New York) to the Soul of VH1, BET, and TVOne’s Unsung.
