Enhancing Access to the History of San Diego and the Border Region
A twenty-four-month grant project supported by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) with generous funding from The Andrew Mellon Foundation.
San Diego alone among California’s three largest cities has a major historical organization specifically dedicated to documenting its history. Founded in 1928, SDHC is the primary repository for materials of all kinds relating to the San Diego region. Among the institution's greatest treasures are its archival collections, which are complemented by related holdings including major collections of maps, ephemera, oral histories, and other materials that support scholarly research.
The aim of this project is to create finding aids for 133 archival collections relating to economic, social, and cultural aspects of greater San Diego. Finding aids are documents containing detailed information about a specific collection that can be used by researchers to determine its relevance to their research. The materials that are the focus of this project constitute a comprehensive portrait of the history and evolution of American's ninth largest city and the surrounding region, including Baja California.
These collections have a tremendously high scholarly value for researchers interested in the history of the San Diego area and its mixture of Spanish, Mexican, and American cultures. They document topics such as Indians, filibustering expeditions into Mexico, commercial activities on both sides of the border, the temperance movement, and women's history. Making them available to researchers will be a boon to scholarly research on San Diego, the border region, and innumerable other topics.
