What was it like for the Spanish to live in an adobe fort on a new frontier? Journey back in time and tread in the footsteps of the padres, soldiers, and settlers who established the first mission and presidio in California. Docents lead students over the grassy slope that once was the plaza, stopping at the stables, the chapel and the commandant’s house, which are now ruins that lay protected underground. Docents point out where the main entrance, soldiers’ barracks, and jail were, as well as other notable features of the site.
Inside the 1929 Serra Museum, students investigate artifacts to learn more about pre-contact life in San Diego, and life during the Spanish and Mexican eras. Students also “meet” real historic figures by dressing in costume as Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, Father Serra, leather jacket soldier Guillermo Carrillo, Señorita Pico, Josefa Carillo de Fitch, and George Marston.
Food, drinks and photography are not allowed inside the museums.
