SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTES:
Postcards produced by various printing companies and processes, either blank or postmarked with correspondence. Images document people, places, and events throughout the San Diego County area. Includes cityscapes, landscapes, waterscapes, aerials, panoramas, and portraits; views of buildings, structures, landmarks, tourist attractions, and other points of interest. Featured subjects include Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, the Panama-California Exposition of 1915, and the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935; beaches, hotels, and resorts; U.S. Navy and other military facilities, equipment, and training; Old Town and Ramona’s marriage place; Tent City and Hotel del Coronado; Star of India and other ships; Point Loma Lighthouse and the Theosophical Institute; Native Americans, Father Junipero Serra, and California missions. Other subjects include agriculture, aviation, businesses, churches, clubs, dams, dwellings, ferryboats, fire departments, hospitals, libraries, parades, railroads, schools, sports stadiums, the USS Bennington disaster, and the Tijuana Insurrection of 1911. Locations depicted include the back country, Coronado, Del Mar, El Cajon, Escondido, Imperial Valley, Julian, La Jolla, Mission Bay, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Oceanside, Pacific Beach, Palomar, Point Loma, downtown San Diego, San Diego Bay, Sunset Cliffs, Torrey Pines, Warner Hot Springs, Tijuana, and Baja California. Other cards express birthday wishes, extend holiday greetings, convey humorous messages, commemorate special occasions, reproduce art works, or portray racial stereotypes. The collection also includes postcard booklets, boxed sets, and miniature photograph albums; postal cards issued before 1900; and a few cards made of unusual materials such as leather, copper, fabric, or wood.
