BIOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL NOTE:
Hans Henrik Holck Doe (1903-1988) was born in Norway. His family immigrated to Victoria, British Columbia in 1910. Doe graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California in Berkeley in 1925. From 1930-1945, Doe operated the Hans H. Doe and Co., a barge design and construction company, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the mid-1930’s Doe married Margaret Beery and moved to Vista, California in 1946 where he became an avocado and macadamia nut farmer. Dubbed “Mr. Water,” Doe was a longtime member of the boards of the Vista Irrigation District, San Diego County Water Authority, and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. He also held positions with the State Soil Conservation Commission, Resource Conservation Districts Association, and Southern California Water Conference. Doe was actively involved with the Republican Party, particularly with Richard Nixon’s political campaigns in San Diego.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The photographs, slides, and negatives in this collection chronicle the family and professional life of Hans Doe. Includes images of the Doe family, Doe’s barge construction business in Milwaukee, his avocado and macadamia nut farm in Vista, political involvement with the Republican Party, including Richard Nixon’s campaign, and career in water development in San Diego County. Of particular interest are aerial photographs of Vista orchards and the political campaign rallies for Richard Nixon.
