Postal Markings ~ Ship Cancels

During the California Pacific Exposition, a number of U.S. naval ships were at San Diego open to the public for visits and inspection. Ship cancels are scarce. If you have images you would like to contribute to this page, they will be most welcome. Contact

1935 ~ First Year:

1936 ~ Second Year: In 1935, November 11 was not only Armistice Day, but also closing Day of the Exposition. Covers dated 8/23/27 were canceled in Fleet Review Week.

Note: from Postal Markings of United States Expositions by William J. Bomar, published by David G. Phillips Publishing Co., Inc, 1986 (LOC 86-62510)

Here is a cancel with the logo of the Japanese training ship Taiseimaru, stamped on the back with with a date stamp "Jul 29, 1935".

Here's a wonderful display of CPIE Expo covers and ship cancels by Larry Gregg. The USS Lexington image is from his pages.
