The man standing next to the automobile is Elijah J. Gentry (born June 15, 1877 and died December 28, 1968), a shoe shiner who was active in the local chapter of the NAACP, serving as its president in 1924 and perhaps earlier (may have been the chapter's founding president in 1919).
