Samuel Duffie Hinton (b. 1917) was Director of the Desert Museum in Palm Springs from 1942-1944. He came to California in 1944 as Editor of Illustration at the
University of California Division of War Research (UCDWR), a
University of California-wide wartime laboratory that was located at
Pt. Loma. He came to the Scripps Institution of
Oceanography in 1946 as Curator of the Thomas Wayland Vaughan Aquarium
Museum. In 1965, Hinton moved to the upper campus and became UCSD's
Assistant Director, Relations with Schools, and in 1967 he became
Associate Director.
Hinton has written and illustrated books on marine biology and is widely known as a singer of folk music, a sampling of which you can hear below. He continues to teach and perform folk music regularly in San Diego schools and occasionally for the public.
This SDHS Oral History interview was conducted by Dr. Craig Carter on February 1, 1990 at Sam Hinton's La Jolla home. It has been edited for this on-line presentation. Two classic Hinton musical performances, not part of the interview, are included for your enjoyment and provide a glimpse into Mr. Hinton's interests in both marine biology and folk music.
